Whale Watching December through March is prime time for whale watching on the Brookings coast, but a sighting can occur year round. Gray whales are the most commonly spotted whales during this time as they make their annual migration to Baja, Mexico.

Venues in the Brookings area perfect for whale watching include Harris Beach State ParkChetco Point Park, Cape Ferrelo, and Sporthaven Beach.

Tips for whale watching:

  • Morning light (sun at your back) is the best time to catch sight of a whale
  • Look for the Spout with your naked eye
  • Use binoculars to get a closer look, focusing in on the area where you saw the spout

Whale Spoken Here volunteers will be on site at Harris Beach December 27-31 to assist visitors with whale sighting.
